Halibut Cheeks

So who knew that Halibut Cheeks would be so popular in Wisconsin??? Especially in Wausau?  Well, unfortunately, Dan & I had to travel up there for my Uncle Lorry's (Lawrence) funeral.

We arrived in Wausau in the evening and decided to go to dinner as we hadn't heard from other relatives if there were any plans that night.  Fortunately, I had done a bit of research before we left IL and found Wright Place on 6th...near my grandparents' former house.

It seats about 40 people and was a true delight!!! We had our own private dining room which was perfect!  Our meal couldn't have been better.  We started with an appetizer of halibut cheeks and a wonderful light white sauce.  For $9, it was wonderful and there were at least 5 cheeks and very meaty at that!

So, the service was quite nice and I was able to see a lot of relatives that I haven't seen in many years.  And, because we're related on both sides, (2 sisters married 2 brothers - how's that!), I saw many, many people.

After the service, we took the trek home which was fine until we got to Milwaukee...traffic like I haven't seen there for years!!!  It was a bit earlier than what we normally eat dinner, but we figured it made more sense to stop and relax with a pleasant meal.  We went to Mia Famiglia in Hales Corners where I ordered a Pinot Grigio...they were out of the Argentinian Torrentes.  And guess what their special appetizer was...yup!  Halibut cheeks... with roasted chocolate tomatoes and a reduced balsamic glaze.  Very delightful, indeed!

Once we were back on the road, there was no traffic to speak of, thankfully!

RIP, Uncle Lorry...I will miss you.
